2010 - the year so far…

So, I’ve been asked a lot lately how the weather has been, and the outlook for the 2010 harvest.

Well…..  let’s see.

The spring was cold & rainy and we had a late frost the killed some of the tender shoots & buds.  This has resulted in smaller crops on some of our varieties, but some were still dormant and unaffected.

The summer was nice & dry & sunny, but not exceptionally hot.  so we kept pace with a typical year, but didn’t make up any ground from the cold, wet spring.

And so far the fall has not given us any favours either, it’s turned cool & wet already.  In fact out of the whole summer I can only remember a couple of weeks when the temperatures were above average, most of the time it’s been slightly cooler than average.

So… what does that mean for harvest 2010?

Well in one word - late.  We won’t be starting to pick until October.  This happened in 2008, and we didn’t start picking until thanksgiving.  The problem in 2008 was that we had a killing frost at thanksgiving, several weeks earlier than normal.  So this year we’re really hoping to catch a small break and some decent warm, sunny weather in September and October and potentially let the Pinot’s hang until November….

This could be our latest harvest ever!
