Grape Stomp
I just uploaded some photos from our 2008 grape stomp. (you can find them under gallery - great experiences) - this was our second annual stomp - with more to come (hopefully).
It was a fantastic day, the weather was beautiful (for mid October) and everyone seemed to have a great time. Elements womens travel in Ladysmith organizes an event where lucky participants get to come and pick in our vineyard for a half day - followed by lunch, a little wine, and a grape stomp. We love it, for a number of reasons. We get a bunch of grapes picked (6 rows of Pinot Gris, and two rows of Agria this year), and we get to have fun doing it. The grape stomp at the end is the must-do experience of the day. Everyone who’s seen I love Lucy stomping grapes feels they have to try it too. We dump bins of our picked grapes into a primary fermenting tub, and after participants wash their feet they climb in and start stomping the grapes. At the end, we transport the crushed grapes to the winery, and use it in that years vintage…
So if you get a chance to participate in a grape stomp, don’t hestitate - just jump on in. Yes the stems can be a little hard on your feet, but once things get stomped a little, it’s a pretty neat sensation.
We hope to do this every year, so stay tuned next year if you want to take part.
